Primary Cells & Media
Approximately 100 different Primary Cell types from a diverse selection of human and animal tissues are available. These cells have undergone very few population doublings and are therefore more representative of the main functional component of the tissue from which they are derived in comparison to continuous (tumour or artificially immortalised) cell lines. The Primary Cells are also referred to as Normal Early Passage Cells. The cultures are isolated and banked by the long-established company Cell Applications Inc. based in San Diego, USA.
A whole series of specialised growth media to complement the Primary Cells is available from ECACC. The media has been manufactured and quality control tested by Cell Applications Inc. to the highest standards to ensure each individual medium produces optimal growth for a particular cell type. Each specialised growth medium is provided in kit form consisting of the basal medium plus required supplements supplied frozen at -20°C. Media can be ordered either with the relevant cell type or separately.
The Primary Cells are cultivated within unique CAI media which has been formulated according to the characteristics of the individual cell line. We strongly recommend that you order the corresponding media with your Primary Cell purchase. If you use alternative media and experience difficulties culturing the cells we will not be able to substantiate your claim.
